Scholarship + Bursaries
Lou Cahill Scholarship in Communications
Patrick Volpe is the 2017 winner of the $1,250 Lou Cahill Scholarship in Communications awarded by Brock University, St. Catharines. The Scholarship is awarded to a third-year student studying in the four-year communications program in the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) – Business Communication. Scholarship recipients are recognized for academic excellence, community involvement and participation in charitable activities.
Torchia Scholarship in Communications
Trinh Dong of Calgary, AB is this year’s recipient of the 2016/17 $1,500 Torchia Scholarship in Communications, established by Torchia Communications to honour its founder, Armand Torchia, Montreal. Dong is enrolled in the Bachelor of Communications – Public Relations at Mount Royal University.
The Scholarship recognizes a student who best exemplifies the spirit and practice of bilingualism in the Canadian communications and public relations profession and is studying in one of Canada’s two official languages which is not his/her mother tongue.
The Foundation held $448 at 2017 fiscal year-end for this Scholarship.
Calgary Legacy Scholarship
The sixth Calgary Legacy Scholarship was awarded in 2016/17 to Sarah Bartlett who is studying at Mount Royal University, in the Bachelor of Communications – Public Relations in Calgary, AB. All applicants are required to submit a curriculum vitae, a completed application form, letter from their education institute that attests to eligibility and a two-page written submission on the topic: “Codes of ethics or professional standards talk about the practice of public relations being in the public interest. What does that mean to you and why is it important?”
Susan Francis Prize in Public Relations
Katherine Smiley is the recipient of the 2016/17 Susan Francis Prize. The Scholarship is awarded to a public relations student in his/her final year of a public relations/communications program at Mount Royal University, University of Calgary or SAIT Polytechnic.
David Milliken Media Communications Award
Samantha Machan is this year’s recipient of the David Milliken Media Communications Award. The award was established by CNW Group (now CISION) through the Foundation with a gift of $5,000. A $1,000 award is to be made annually to a student in the final year of the BPR program at Humber College in Toronto.
Tisdall Lecture In Communications
The Diana and Charles Tisdall Lecture in Communications featured annually at the CPRS national conference honours Charles Tisdall, Toronto, who died 10 years ago, and who was one of the founders of the Communications + Public Relations Foundation. The Foundation provides funding toward the speaker honorarium or expenses each year.
Jack Yocom Profile Collection
The Jack Yocom Profile Collection is the responsibility of the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS) College of Fellows. During 2016/17 two new Profiles were written for the Collection under the leadership of Mary Barker, APR, FCPRS(H). Derrick Pieters APR, FCPRS and Patrick Macleod’s profiles will bring the Collection to 21. The e-book version and pdf versions of the entire Collection will be updated once the new profiles are finalized.
The Foundation is holding $2,552 toward this project and it has been agreed by CPRS that the Foundation hold these funds until they are needed.
Victoria Foundation/CPRS (Vancouver Island)
The Foundation’s agreement with CPRS (Vancouver Island) and the Victoria Foundation continues with monies donated by the Victoria Foundation annually to be released for educational activities at the direction of CPRS (Vancouver Island). Victoria Foundation funds enable a member to attend the CPRS national conference, a student to receive the Denis Racine student bursary and books that
